How blood tests can help detect tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is one of the most dangerous infectious diseases worldwide and is particularly serious in children.

Certain blood values indicate inflammation and are easy to measure. Recent studies show that these values are often higher in children with tuberculosis (TB) than in healthy children.

A Swiss study called CITRUS, led by Prof. Dr. Nicole Ritz, showed that these blood values provide clues as to whether or not a child has tuberculosis.

These blood values could therefore serve as an additional aid in diagnosis in the future. To investigate this in more detail, a follow-up study involving several centers such as Munich, Rome, Barcelona, and Vienna is being conducted at the Children’s Hospital of Central Switzerland under the direction of Ass. Prof. Dr. Nora Fritschi with Rares-Constantin Anton, doctoral student at KidZ, and through the international network pTBnet.

The CCHA is supporting this project with coordination and data consolidation.
