Therapy decision for pleuropneumonia

Which method is safest for children?

Children can sometimes develop complications from pneumonia. One of these is pleuropneumonia. In addition to the infection, fluid accumulates in the chest cavity around the lungs.

If pleuropneumonia is severe—for example, if there is a lot of fluid—treatment with antibiotics alone is sometimes not enough and surgery is necessary. There are different methods for this.

It is not yet clear which of these methods is best. It is also unclear how often further complications occur.

As part of a master’s thesis at the University of Lucerne, Prof. Dr. Nicolas Regamey and Melina Ana Ilar, a master’s student in medicine, now want to find out more about this. The CCHA is supporting this project with data extraction and data validation.
