How probiotics could help prevent unnecessary treatments

Newborn babies can develop FPIAP: a benign inflammation of the digestive tract that is accompanied by blood in the stool. Blood in the stool is also a symptom of other diseases and therefore leads to further investigations and tests, which can be stressful for such a small child. It is now believed that certain probiotics can help reduce the frequency of FPIAP. This could also lead to a reduction in unnecessary further investigations for other diseases. As part of a master’s thesis, Prof. Dr. Martin Stocker and Nina Dahinden, a medical student, are now investigating this by comparing children with and without probiotic intake. The CCHA is supporting this project with data extraction and data validation.
