Who is better at recognizing cases of appendicitis?

This project with Prof. Julia Vogt’s research group at ETH Zurich is about validating a machine learning model in children with appendicitis. Specifically, the question is: can the machine recognize cases of appendicitis faster and better than a human alone?

Unspecific symptoms, different pain sensations, atypical courses, the age of the child or an altered anatomy can make the diagnosis of appendicitis more difficult. Prompt medical treatment is important to prevent serious complications, such as a ruptured appendix.

This should make it possible to recognize patterns from existing data and generate predictions or decision-making aids without the need for explicit programming.
